What Style of Fence is Right For You and Your Property?

Blog

Before you decide on a new fence for your property, you need to consider all the pros and cons of every fence style available today, as choosing the same fence as all your neighbours can be a mistake. Your neighbour's fences may need more maintenance than you realize, or may not provide the privacy you want for you and your family. Your neighbours may also be on a stricter budget than you! To ensure you find a fence that is right for your property and your expectations in particular, consider some suggestions for different fencing styles based on your needs.

When you need something low-maintenance

If you hate spending time on household chores, avoid a wood fence; wood is notorious for needing consistent sanding and repainting throughout the years. Also, a very cheap hurricane fence may be prone to sagging along the middle of the linked sections, and will need tightening throughout the years.

Aluminium is naturally resistant to corrosion, but steel may rust over time, and that rust will need to be sanded and removed, so choose aluminium if you want a metal fence. Glass and vinyl fences are probably the most maintenance-free, as these materials don't rust or corrode and never need repainting or refinishing.

When you want to decorate your fence

If you've thought about adding hanging flower pots, outdoor lights, or outdoor artwork to your fence, avoid chain link. Even with a durable steel mesh, the weight of those items can cause the sections of the fence to eventually sag. Wood fences are not good for holding metal brackets and hooks, as wood will hold moisture which can cause that metal to rust. The soft material of wood might also eventually sag under the weight of hooks and brackets. Instead, opt for a metal fence with bars or pickets, so you can drill into the posts and securely attach hooks for outdoor accessories.

If you want privacy but not panels

If you need privacy from your neighbours, you can opt for a wood or vinyl panels, but those panels may see a bit imposing, especially in a smaller yard. Instead, opt for a metal mesh fence with a smaller mesh. This will allow light and air to circulate, but also obscure the view of the neighbours. You might also consider a tall wood or vinyl slat fence; space the slats just slightly apart so that there is still light that comes through to your space, while still adding privacy to your yard.

Fencing off the yard

Our dogs are lots of fun and very energetic, but they also have a scary bark. It's great to make the house more secure, but I am always worried that they'll scare people just passing by the house, so we have a tall fence to keep the dogs in. It makes people feel better if they can't see the dogs, and it makes me feel better to know that the dogs are safe and secure in our yard. This blog is all about keeping your yard secure so that your dogs will be safe inside and don't make the neighbours feel nervous.
