Metal vs Wood Fences and Gates

Blog

If you are currently looking to install a new fence with a gate to protect your residential property, two of the main materials to choose from are wood and metal. While these are both durable and attractive materials, they each have unique qualities that might cause you to choose one over the other. Here are some things to consider when deciding between a wood or metal fence and gate.

Metal Is More Secure

When security is one of the main reasons you are getting a fence with a gate, metal is typically the better option. Metal is almost impossible for an intruder to penetrate, and sliding gates made of metal tend to be a lot harder to open than wooden gates. With wood, there is a risk of someone bringing tools like an axe up to the fence and knocking enough slats down to get through and gain access onto your property. This isn't a risk you take when you choose a metal fence.

Wood Is Aesthetically Pleasing

As far as the way they look, both fences can be attractive, but there is a unique quality about wood fences and gates that is hard to duplicate. With the wood fence, you get a warm and charming appearance for your home. The fence can actually add to the overall appeal of your home and increase your curb appeal, whereas a metal fence tends to take away from the appeal of your home's exterior.

Metal Doesn't Require As Much Maintenance

Don't forget to consider the required care and maintenance of each material. Wood does require a little more maintenance since you need to care for cracks and holes, look out for wood-boring insects, and seal it to protect the wood from rotting as a result of rain and other inclement weather. Metal lasts a lot longer and tends to be much lower in maintenance requirements.

Wood Offers Better Privacy

Wood fences and gates tend to offer more options as far as blocking the view of your home and property from people walking or driving down the street. Many of the wood fences you can choose from have slats and boards that are close together, so nobody can see past them unless the gate is open. With metal, it is much less likely to find a fence that doesn't have bars with large gaps in between them. If privacy is a concern, you might prefer going with a wood fence and gate.

Fencing off the yard

Our dogs are lots of fun and very energetic, but they also have a scary bark. It's great to make the house more secure, but I am always worried that they'll scare people just passing by the house, so we have a tall fence to keep the dogs in. It makes people feel better if they can't see the dogs, and it makes me feel better to know that the dogs are safe and secure in our yard. This blog is all about keeping your yard secure so that your dogs will be safe inside and don't make the neighbours feel nervous.
